They put even my private irrevocable trust's name in all caps. Do you make them change it?? And what about your other services like cell phone, internet, utilities, etc.. how are you avoiding dealing with them dealing with your all caps name and not you?
Great question, Holly—and one we’ve all had to wrestle with.
The short answer is: We’re in a transition. Some systems will collapse or be repurposed, but in the meantime, we’re navigating two realities—one dead, one living.
For now, I don’t fight every ALL CAPS occurrence, but I do correct the record where it matters most: lawful filings, commercial notice, travel, and contracts tied to rights and standing. In most everyday services (utilities, bank accounts, etc.), I treat them as tools, not authorities. That means they’re instruments under condition—not identifiers of who I am.
If they insist on the ALL CAPS, I make a record: “Accepted under protest and without consent to alter or presume my living status.” You’d be surprised how far that goes when documented properly.
With trusts, I’ve had better luck. For irrevocable private trusts, you can insist on proper formatting—but it takes patience, sometimes a supervisor, and always keeping a copy of the trust declaration on hand.
Bottom line: don’t let their format dictate your truth. Stand as the living, even when they pretend not to see it. And soon, they won’t have a choice.
How are you going to get them to do that without the water company shutting your water off as a retaliation or misunderstanding?
Ah yes—the retaliation mechanism of the dead system. Water, power, access to your own home—these are the levers they’ve used to keep the living compliant. I won’t pretend it’s always easy, but here’s what I’ve learned:
It’s not about forcing them to understand—it’s about you claiming jurisdiction in writing, in record, and in truth. When it comes to utilities, I proceed with this mindset: “I am not asking for permission to live—I am conditionally accepting your services under terms I define.”
I often do this in writing, with an affidavit or cover letter on file that clarifies my standing. And if they push back, I keep the receipts—every notice, payment, correspondence—because we are building a cumulative record that will speak for itself when the next level of enforcement rolls out.
In some cases, we’ve had to preemptively pay while contesting the terms—not out of fear, but to protect peace in the home while the system collapses.
The good news? Every time one of us stands and documents it, it strengthens the field for everyone else.
